Empathy, or "ultrasensitivity" as I like to call it, is a trait that we all have, really, except that the majority of people learn how to "block" it at an early age. But it is a trait whereby we "feel" in a very enhanced way the feelings or the "energy" of certain people, places and situations. If we look at everything as "energy" and the idea of "substance" is really an illusion, and we realize that we are all connected (because we are) and because of that, these bodies really don't exist - all there is, is energy and if we are all connected, that means that if a person is feeling something, and that feeling is energy, then we can share those feelings that they feel. However, given that the world view is predominantly negative, that is where we get stuck. We are around people who give off negative "vibes" all the time, and we, as sensitives, absorb those vibes and it actually can become part of us and our aura, which is why life for empaths can become so difficult.
I always felt, as a child, like there was something wrong with me because I just couldn't seem to get out from underneath. I was labeled a crybaby and "too sensitive" at a very early age and it stuck throughout my childhood and throughout my early adult life, all the way to my mid-thirties. It wasn't until I had the privilege of befriending a wonderful woman at my church who was an empath, and she helped me through. I learned so much from her and in the years that followed, she taught me how to recognize my trait as a gift, and not a curse.
So I am here to tell you that all is not lost for us! Empathy is a wonderful way to "tune into" people and situations and, if we can get a handle on what is us and what is them, feeling wise - we can help - which is what empathy is all about - getting out of ourselves, experiencing the joy of life and the ability to help others who feel they cannot help themselves. More tomorrow!
